Doing what I do I get a lot of people asking me about computers and for advice etc, so I decided to dedicate and entire article to it. I've posted it over at TestFreaks, where of course you can find a lot more of my stuff..
Title: Tips and Tricks: Optimize Your Computer For Speed and Efficiency @ TestFreaks
Link: http://www.testfreaks.com/blog/information/tips-and-tricks-optimize-your-computer-for-speed-and-efficiency/
Quote: "I’ve been into computers for many years now, too many to count at this point, but when someone in my family or any friends have a computer problem they call me to help them out. One of the biggest complaints I run across is speed, and why is their computer running slow. There are of course a plethora of reasons their computer is running slow, usually it’s a virus or they’ve just got too much stuff going on at the same time and their computer just can’t handle it. Another thing I’ve run across is that people think a five year old computer should be able to do everything that a one year old computer can do, they think if it’s not broke, don’t fix it. Generally that’s a good rule, but not for computers really, the technology evolves so fast that in about six months your brand new computer is now a generation or two behind what’s on the market today. There are several things that one can do to make their computer faster and more responsive and I’ve compiled a list of many of them, it’s by no means every single thing you can do, but a lot of them are ones that the average user can do themselves with little or no technical knowledge. These tips are not limited to desktops, but for netbooks and laptops as well, but they can be limited by the operating system you’re using… "

Computer
cases have come a long way from the days of the beige box. Many of
today’s PC cases are designed to showcase one’s PC so it could be
proudly displayed in the work/play area. For today’s review NZXT
sent us one such case - the Lexa S. This steel case is designed with
cooling performance in mind but is also a looker with its clear
smoked side window and all black interior. To make your PC pretty on
the inside NZXT also provides excellent cable management with
numerous case and motherboard tray punch outs and rubber grommets for wire organization.
The
case features four included case fans, seven expansion slots and
eleven drive bays. It supports ATX, micro-ATX and AT motherboards.
If you are worried about fan noise NZXT provides a fan control on the
front of the case. If you a water cooling enthusiast there are pre
drilled water cooling holes on the back plate.
One
way to describe the Lexa S is with a word I tend not use in tech
reviews - sexy. This case is a stunner that is designed to catch
your eye. Now external appearances don’t always tell the whole
story, so today we will be taking an in depth look the Lexa S.
Let’s
get started…..

One
technique for capturing great photos is by using a tripod.
Unfortunately not all environments are conducive for tripod use.
Plus lugging around a standard tripod can be a pain in the butt.
Thankfully Joby a company known for camera accessories have a remedy
for this very problem. They are the makes of the Gorillapod line of
flexible tripods and today we will check out their Gorillapod
SLR-Zoom tripod.
This
funky looking tripod is designed to securely mount cameras weighing
up to 6.5 pounds. It is designed to be used in conjunction with the
Ballhead SLR-Zoom. It is important to note that the Ballhead
SLR-Zoom must be purchased separately as it does not come with the
Gorillapod SLR-Zoom.
What
separates the Gorillapod SLR-Zoom from other tripods are its two
dozen bendable and rotatable leg joints that allows the tripod to be
positioned on virtually any surface. So if you need a tripod that can
work on almost any terrain and you should check out our review of the
Gorillapod SLR-Zoom.
Let’s
take a closer look…….

Music and multi-media has become an
integral part of our lives. Look around some time and I'm sure you'll
see many people out around you with a set of headphones on, jacked
in, listening to music. If you look closely though at a lot of those
people you'll notice that they're using the stock ear buds that came
with the player they're using, and I guess they're happy with that.
Why would you spend hundreds of dollars on a music player and
hundreds if not thousands more on your music only to listen to it
through an inferior stock set of ear buds. I don't know about you
but I can't do it, I gave the stock ear buds a try on my Zune, iPod
and Sansa but after a few minutes they went back in the box as I just
couldn't stand the uninspiring sound from them.
Today for review I've got a very high
quality set of ear buds from a relatively new audio company called
Thinksound. The ear buds or headphones are just called Rain, and what
really sets them apart is not only the relatively low price but the
fact that they're made of wood. Look around, I can guarantee that
when you see a set of ear buds or headphones they're made of either
plastic or metal, not wood. A good set of speakers for your home are
made of wood, there's a reason for that, wood makes things sound
better. Read on to learn more about a very good sounding and
constructed set of ear buds...

Time
after time Noctua has proven to us at Dragonsteelmods that they make
some of the finest CPU cooling solutions on the market. Recently we
received their latest LGA1156/LGA1366 cooler – the NH-U9B SE2 and
today we will be looking at it in detail. Noctua designed this
cooler to provide maximal cooling while remaining whisper quiet with
HTPC and smaller enclosures in mind.
Looking
at the NH-U9B SE2 you may
notice its similarities to the bigger Noctua NH-U12P
cooler. In fact the NH-U9B SE2 is almost identical in form other
than the smaller size.
The
NH-U9B SE2 includes Noctua’s SecuFirm2 multisocket mounting system
which allows this cooler to work with numerous socket configurations
including: LGA1366, LGA1156, LGA775, AM2, AM2+ and AM3. Noctua built
this CPU cooler around their highly regarded NH-U9 series of compact
coolers. They also provide two 92mm NF-B9 fans with included Low-Noise
and Ultra-Low-Noise-Adaptors. According to Noctua the two
fans are designed to work best in a push-pull arrangement. Plus
Noctua warranties this cooler for six years.
So let’s
take a closer look at the NH-U9B SE2.

Hello again, we're back with another
review for you, this time it's another product from our friends at Mionix.
Today for review I've got what I think
is one of the best gaming mice on the market today, the Mionix Naos
5000. This mouse is truly one that is just chock full of features
that even the most hardcore gamer will appreciate, and even if you're
not a gamer you'll like this mouse and what it's capable of. The Naos
5000 has got a 5040 DPI sensor in it, one the highest on the market
today and it features adjustable weights, the ability to create five
profiles and macros as well. The Naos 5000 also come with a surface
analyzer tool so you can truly tell which mousepad works the best,
and you can even change the colors of the LEDs in it to suit your own
tastes. So read on to learn about one of the best mice out there
today...

So I've got my HTPC setup with a
wireless mouse, EFO
Wireless Handheld Keyboard and even the
GlideTV, but I'm using a corded keyboard which makes like a bit hard
when it comes to distancing myself from the PC. Sure the little EFO
keyboard is nice and all, but not for typing a lot, and really
there's nothing like having a full sized keyboard at your disposal. A
nice wireless keyboard is the way to go, but it can't be just any,
it's got to be rugged, I've got kids, and it has to have navigation
functions built-in like a mouse and even some hot keys as well. Yeah
I'm picky, but I think I found the perfect wireless keyboard for your
HTPC or just any PC really, well it's almost perfect it's missing one
thing...
Today for review I've got the Aurora
Micro Wireless Keyboard from Enermax. Not only is this keyboard
stylish and very well made, but it includes a laser trackball so for
an HTPC you won't have need for a mouse really. The Aurora also has
has several hot keys for launching Media Center, Music, Videos,
Pictures and others, along with basic multi-media functions. I've
been using it for a couple weeks now as the only keyboard on my HTPC
setup and I've come to truly like it lot. It's a small sized
keyboard, about the size of that on a laptop, and the keys are
similar, but they are comfortable to type on. Read on to learn

Arctic
Cooling is a company renowned for their PC cooling products. So
today’s review will be something outside their normal product line.
Today we will look at one of their first forays into the portable
audio market with the Arctic Sound E361-WM. Recently they debut
their Arctic Sound line of audio products and this model is the high
end version of their earphone line with the 1 and 2 series being
their standard and mid-range models..
The
Arctic Sound E361-WM was designed by Swiss and German audio experts
to deliver deep bass and rich highs with quality using components which include an aluminum chassis,
silicone ear caps and gold plated stereo plug. They even provide a
carrying case for storing and protecting the headphones.
So let’s
see if Arctic Cooling’s new earphones are worth the investment or
if they should have stuck with PC cooling. Let’s get started……

With
the release of the Intel Atom processor, Home Theater PCs (HTPC) are
becoming more affordable and thus more common place. One
complication in using a HTPC is how to control the system from the
comfort of one’s couch. Using a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse is
one such system but can be rather bulky and unwieldy. Today’s
review item is capable of replacing the mouse and keyboard combo with
one small device that fits in the palm of one’s hand. It is the
called the Navigator from a company called – GlideTV.
The
GlideTV Navigator works with PCs, Macs and PS3s and allows these
devices to be controlled using just one thumb. It features a
touchpad with core function buttons, media buttons and eight
additional buttons around the perimeter of the touchpad. All these
features can help reduce the need for a keyboard in the HTPC setup.
So
let’s take a closer look at this neat little device.

We're going to be doing Xbox360 Game reviews here on DragonSteelMods but our Wii Game reviews will be on my other site called Wii Digest.
Our first review is of Ju-On: The Grudge: Haunted House Simulator, so stop over and check it out.
http://wiidigest.com/2010/01/02/review-ju-on-the-grudge-haunted-house-simulator/
Quote: "For review today I have JU-ON: The Grudge : Haunted House Simulator.
This game is loosely based on the movies of the same name, and their
original Japanese counterpart. I like horror and the Grudge was a
decent scary movie so I was a bit excited about a game based on it. The
basic idea is that you play one of the characters in the game, it’s
sort of a first person shooter, but there’s not shooting involved,
you’ve got a flashlight and that’s it. The game takes place in
different locations with you trying to escape with your life basically
in each one. it does have some actual scary moments where you’ll jump,
but the controls are horrid to the point that the game is no long any
fun." Write Comment (0 comments) |

Happy New Year everyone! It's a new
year and I've got a new review for you!
Today for review I've got the massive
Noctua NH-D14 CPU Cooler. I'm testing it on my Intel Corei5 750 CPU
both at stock speeds and with an overclock. I don't have many other
Socket1156 coolers on hand so I've put it up against two other Noctua
coolers and one from Cooler Master for comparison.
This cooler is massive, it's pretty
much the largest one that I've looked at ever, at those that are air
coolers. There are of course larger specialized cooler like TEC and
water, but the NH-D14 is one humongous air cooler that performs very
well! Read on...
