The hardest part of this test is getting the 1.8 inch hard drive out of the ipod. HERE is a site (PCMag) with a straight forward tutorial on opening the ipod.

Once everything is all plugged in, the setup looks as follows:

Now the PC will detect the 1.8b inch drive as either a USB drive if using the USB to IDE adapter or as an internal hard drive if attaching directly into an IDE slot on your motherboard.
