I love my netbook, but it’s got a
glossy finish on it that easily gets funky looking with fingerprints
and fine scratches. I’m sure in a year it will be not very glossy
anymore due to a number of factors like those I mentioned. Yes I
could keep it in a case all of the time etc, but I don’t, when I’m
done with it I’ll put it aside on my desk and if I don’t put it back
in its case right away I end up putting things on top of it. I’m sure
you all do similar things with your laptops and netbooks, just set it
aside and forget about it basically. So what’s one to do when they
want to keep it protected? One answer is what I have for review
today.
Today for review I’ve got a netbook
skin, not just any though, it’s from a company called MusicSkins. On
their site you can choose from many pre-made skins, but I don’t want
what someone else has, I like to be different and have one of a kind
things. So today I’m looking at the MusicSkins Customizer, with this
you can create your very own skins that are a unique as you are. In
the customizer you can add text and graphics to your skin making it
totally unique to you. It’s a great way to protect your netbook and
at the same time show off your individual style…

A
Better Look at Things:
There is no unboxing for this
product really, so we’ll first take a look at how it works.
On the MusicSkins website you’ll
create your skin with their program. When you open it up you’re
greeted with several choices to create your own skin.
I was creating a skin for my 10.1”
netbook but none of them really fit so I plan to do a bit of
trimming. My netbook is an OCZ Neutrino that I use quite often, I’ve
stuck an OCZ SSD in there and 2gigs of ram so it zips right along
now. The Neutrino is black in color and it has bevel on the lid, I
wanted my skin to fit that bevel, but the regular Medium netbook size
was too small, so I grabbed the large one and that should work just
fine.
My netbook is black so I changed
the color to black to match it. You can choose from a variety of
colors though.
I had an idea in mind, so I only
wanted my dragon logo on the cover. I uploaded it and placed it on
the template. The program allows you to rotate and resize your
pictures easily. You can also add text if you want, but I didn’t. One
note here is that you need to use high resolution pictures for your
skin, just down size them and you’ll be fine, if you try and upsize a
smaller picture it come out looking blurry.
After that you just go to check
out and place your order, then wait for it to arrive.
As far as ordering, I did have an
issue with it, it took almost two weeks to get to me. I have to note
that isn’t normal for their shipping though, I’ve gotten other things
from them and it was here in about 3 days actually. They did upgrade
my shipping for free to Fedex so it would get to me fast after the
shipping issue.
Your custom skin arrives in a
plastic envelope with a little advertisement.
So here’s my skin for my netbook,
yes it’s rather plain but that’s what I wanted.
MusicSkins uses 3M Controltac for
the skins, so the skin is rather thick and durable.
Installation,
Testing and Comparison:
So here’s my netbook, the OCZ
Neutrino:
And here it is with the skin on
it:
The skin was fairly easy to apply,
I found using a credit card was the best way to help in the
application process and to easily remove the bubbles.
I mentioned before the skin I got
was for a large netbook, well it hangs over my hinges, so I just cut
it out a bit. I knew this when I ordered it though that this was
going to happen, grab an X-Acto knife and a few cuts it’s done. It now fits the entire lid of my netbook and not just the center section.
The lid of the netbook also has
the OCZ badge on the cover, I set the dragon logo off center for this
reason so I could cut the logo out and show it.
Here’s a close up of the skin
itself and you can see the indentation where the logo is. The skin
does have a faint texture to it.
And here it is with the OCZ logo
cut out:
Not bad, it works for me.. it’s
rough, needs a bit more trimming, but you get the idea.
The point of the review was the
skin and the customizer itself and not what I did to it.
Summary
and Comments:
The skin is nice and it will offer
decent protection for your netbook.
The customizer program is easy to
use, and in a matter of minutes you’ll have your own skin on the way
to your door.
For $20 I think it’s worth it for
the protection it offers, and being able to customize it is an added
bonus.
