A
Better Look at Things:
Well, I had a video unboxing for
you, but for whatever reason the video was lost… I did the video,
and checked it only to find that the video disappears half way
through it, there’s still audio but no video, so it didn’t work for
whatever reason. Lexar included quite a few things with it, but
here’s the pictures for you.
Lexar sent me the Shoot-n-Syc in a
large box with an included T-Shirt, and stress relieving thing along
with information and a press kit.
The card comes in the dreaded
sealed plastic clamshell style package, and inside we find the card
itself and a handy USB card reader.
Installation,
Testing and Comparison:
Installation
is easy, just follow the on-screen instructions to get it up and
running, once installed there’s a Wi-Fi icon in your taskbar to
access the features.
To get things started you’ve got
to open up the manager and fill in some information, then you’ll
update the firmware and connect to your network.
After that you can select a online
photo service if you want, the location to where you want your
pictures stored on your computer, and you’ll upload your first
picture to test the settings.
I’ve using my Kodak camera and to
prevent the power from shutting off during transfer you’ve got to
enable the slideshow, there’s instructions on how to do this for
several cameras.
Then of course you can start
taking pictures with your Wi-Fi card and they’ll automatically be
uploaded to your computer.
From the manager you can also
change settings as well and even enable Geotagging if you wish.
With the card in my camera I did
find that it does drain the batteries quicker than using a regular
card, but the camera that I have uses batteries up quickly anyway, so
it’s no surprise there really. The speed of transfer of course
depends on the size, I set the size to the maximum of my camera, 5mp,
and it seems to take about 20 seconds to get the picture to my
computer.
I figured I would test the
performance of the card as well and compare it to my ATP ProMax II
4gb SDHC card using SiSoft Sandra 2009 SP2 Removable Storage
Benchmark.
Here’s the overall results:
As you can see the Shoot-n-Sync is
kind of slow…
here’s a closer look at the 256MB
Files test:
As you can see it’s the write
speed that is slowing things down, the result for the Shoot-n-Sync
was a zero and zero does not show up in the graphing charts, so it’s
not a missing bar. It’s saying that it does less than one write
operation per minute.
So it’s not the fastest card
around, but it never claimed to be, the main feature of this card is
of course the Wi-Fi abilities of it, and that’s where it works well.
One thing the card does not do is
transfer videos via Wi-Fi, it only does still pictures, maybe it will
be able to do that eventually, that’s a feature that I’d like to see
really.
Summary
and Comments:
While the Shoot-n-Sync might not
bet he fastest card out there, it does of course have the advantage
of Wi-Fi over every other card on the market today. Having the
ability to wirelessly transfer your pictures via the internet or back
to your computer is something that is not only cool, but very useful
as well.
