Modern laptops have become more powerful and with this growth in power come increased heat production. To deal with this heat most laptops come with thermally controlled exhaust fans which ramp up in speed and volume once the laptop reaches a certain temperature. Evercool has released a product to help dissipate this excess heat and give the laptops fan some support. Today I will be looking at the Evercool Fairy NB-FA1 Air Extracting Notebook Cooler. Lets get started

A Better Look at Things
:
The Evercool Fairy comes packaged on a clear blister card with the notebook cooler centered on the front of a black card board insert.
Once opened, the package contains the air extracting notebook fan, a velvet pouch for carrying the device and the instruction sheet.
The Fairy comes in either black or white depending on the model number. The NB-FA1 model is mostly black with silver writing and accents. Coming off the left side of the device is a black USB plug attached to a retractor. Fully extended, the cable is about two feet long.

Continued:
The fan is located under the circular Evercool logo and has an exhaust port on the right hand side. The side that attaches to the pc features two metal clips with a thumb wheel that extends or retracts the clips.
Also on the right side is a button that springs the right clip towards the middle of the device, allowing it to hook onto the laptops exhaust vents.
When plugged in the fan gives off a nice red glow. Acoustically, the fan is relatively quiet and is inaudible over the laptops normal ambient noise.
Installation, Testing and Comparison
For testing I tried to install the Evercool Fairy onto my MacBook Pro, a Dell Inspiron 600m and a Dell Latitude Inspiron 6000 without any success. The vents on the Dells were too narrow and the Macbook Pro has the vents behind the hinge of the laptop making it impossible to attach any device to it.
So much for the statement: Compatible for all major NB brands. Luckily, the Fairy did fit my friends Compaq Presario 2100.
To test the cooling capabilities I chose to use Prime95 to stress the machine to the max. For temperature measurements, I used Speedfan.
Installation involves extending the metal clips all the way forward using the thumb wheel. Then, while pressing the side button, place the Fairy over the laptops exhaust vents. Release the spring, and then tighten the thumb wheel to fasten the Evercool Fairy onto the laptop. The final step is plugging in the USB plug into the laptops USB port.
It took a few attempts to get the Fairy on, but once attached it seemed pretty secure.
As seen in the graphs, there was little noticeable gain from using the Evercool Fairy on this particular laptop. Unfortunately, I did not have access to another laptop which fit the Fairy to perform further tests. Theoretically, it seems like the fan trying to suck some of the heat out of the laptops vents would not make a terrific improvement in terms of temperatures.
Researching the Evercool website, I could not find any temperature data on this product. I found that a little peculiar.
Summary:
At this point in time, I can not recommend the Evercool Fairy Notebook Cooler as a notebook cooling solution. Between the inability to fit on two mainstream brands of laptops and the poor cooling performance, I would not use this product in my daily routine.
DragonSteelMods gives the Evercool Fairy NB-FA1 a 2.5 out of 5 score.
Pros:
-Red Led Fan
-Fairly quiet
Cons:
-Poor cooling performance
-Does not fit on several types of laptops
-The name of the product is a little strange, I personally would have gone with something else besides
Fairy.
I would like to thank Evercool for the chance to review the Evercool Fairy NB-FA1 and for their continued support of DSM.
