High Capacity External Portable Battery for iPhone / iPod Review

Power, it seems we always need more power for our gadgets. There’s nothing worse than being out somewhere only to run out of juice is there? You could carry extra cables with you and spare adapters but then you’ll need to spend more money for those sorts of things. Is it worth it? Maybe, but the product I have today is better and easier than carrying all those extra things. If you’ve got an iDevice then this product will charge it without the need for cables. It’s called the Mobile power Station and our friends and USBFever provided it to us for review. This external portable battery will charge most all iDevices quickly and easily and best of all it will do it many times before you actually have to recharge it.

A Better Look at Things

This product is actually called the Mobile Power Station as it says on the box.

Inside the only thing you’ll find is the portable battery. There’s no cable in there as it uses the cable that comes with your iPhone or iPod to charge it. The battery comes covered with a layer of protective plastic as well.

On the top front you’ll see four LED indicators and a button. The indicators tell you how much charge is left in the battery, you can check by pressing the button and they’re light up. I would assume they’re in 25% increments as there really aren’t any instructions included.

On the top end of the battery you’ll see the standard Apple connector with a silicone cover on it.

On the bottom you’ll find the female version of the Apple connector, this is used with your cable to charge the battery.

Installation, Testing and Comparison

To use it you’ll need to charge it first off. When you plug it in via USB the LEDs will light up and let you know it’s charging. The LEDs will fill in as charging completes, four lit LEDs means it’s fully charged. Fairly simple system I think. Charging time takes six to ten hours depending on how drained the battery is. That might seem like a long time but it is well worth it as you’ll get more than one use from the battery.

Here it is charging my iPod Touch. You just plug it in and it automatically starts charging. I’ve used it a couple times now to fully charge my iPod Touch 4th Gen and there’s still life left in it surprisingly.

The Mobile Power Station works well but it’s rather large in size really, but it is lightweight. Here it is attached to my iPod Touch 4th Gen, Apple iPhone 4 and my iPod nano 5th:

Summary and Comments

I’ve used the Mobile Power Station a few times now and it works great really. I charged it once and recharged my iPod Touch twice now and I’ve still got plenty of juice left for a couple more recharges I think.

The size is a bit large, but I don’t think that much of a problem really. You can use your device while it’s charging or not which is nice.

The only small complaint I could have is that the connector seems a bit fragile, I’d like to see some better cover over it other than just a piece of silicone.

The price I think is about right; basically $28 shipped to you anywhere in the world from USBFever isn’t too bad for what it can offer.
