A Better Look at Things
:
Ok, let’s check out the packaging, first, if you visit the LapWorks site you will see the Laptop Desk comes packaged in a plastic clamshell, thankfully they didn’t send me the clamshell for this review. LapWorks sent the Laptop Desk 2.0 in a large ziplock bag along with a nice folder full of information regarding the Laptop Desk 2.0.
Attached to the Laptop Desk is a piece of cardboard which tells you all about the product, on the back of the insert is more information and basic instructions for using the Laptop Desk 2.0.
If read the specs you would know that the Laptop Desk is rather small in it’s folded position, about the size of a standard laptop. It could easily fit into your laptops’ carrying case along with your laptop so you can take it with you wherever you go.
Unfolded, the Laptop Desk 2.0 essentially doubles in size, there is space on each side of your laptop once it is in place on the Laptop Desk.
The majority of the ‘flat’ surfaces on the Laptop Desk are covered in a textured, non-slip rubber to keep your laptop in place and anything else you decide to use with it. On each side, in the corner is the LapWorks/Laptop Desk web address.
There are large, sturdy hinges on each side of the desk, they are bevel to interlock with each side and provide support. On the inside edge you will also find the website address again. Your laptop essentially sits on the rubberized sections that are raised higher, the channels that are there are to permit airflow to the laptop and to keep the heat away from you lap.
Flipping it over we find that the parts of the Laptop Desk that will touch your legs are rubberized also to make sure it stays put.
On one side of the bottom of the Laptop Desk we find a collapsible stand, this stand is used when you want to use the Laptop Desk to position your laptop at a more comfortable angle to work with.
The opposite side of the Laptop Desk 2.0 has a three sets of five bumps that the stand fits into so you can adjust it to your liking.
Here are a couple pictures of the stand in position.
My first impressions of the Laptop Desk were that it seemed very well made, even though it is plastic it is made of a thick plastic that should be able to handle the weight of a laptop with no problems. The overall design does seem to make sense when compared to other types of laptop ‘desks’, other types do not have the channel to allow airflow under your laptop. The textured rubber grips that are all over the Laptop Desk will make sure it stays put wherever you put it. I like the idea of the adjustable stand, I never really like have to basically lean over my laptop to work with it, it seems to flat, and the height of the actual laptop makes typing uncomfortable for any extended period of time.
Installation and Testing :
Well there really isn’t any installation involved with the Laptop Desk 2.0, basically you need a lap, or enough space on a desk to ‘install’ the Laptop Desk 2.0.
My laptop is a Dell Latitude C640, 14.1 screen, modded as you can tell in the pictures. The C640 weighs in at a little over 5lbs in the normal or standard configuration. The Laptop Desk 2.0 is made for laptops that weigh 5lbs and over so it is just right for mine, LapWorks does feature another version of the Laptop Desk for lighter laptops.
Here are some shots of my laptop in place while the Laptop Desk 2.0 is in Desktop configuration.
You can see from the pictures that my laptop does hang over the edges just a bit, but the rubberized grips hold it firmly and securely in place. Using my laptop this way is actually a lot more comfortable, and it is very nice having the screen at head level instead of looking down at it.
Unfolding the Laptop Desk 2.0 we can see that it is quite large compared to the laptop, giving you lots of room on each side for using a mouse or whatever. Now if it only had a cup holder for my coffee I’d be set!
The sides of the Laptop Desk 2.0 can be used for a mouse as well, I am using a small bluetooth travel mouse with mine in the following picture, while the mousing are is a bit small, you get used to it quickly.
Using the laptop Desk on your lap, it is actually quite comfortable and you really cannot feel much heat coming from your laptop. I was very surprised by this as the C640 gets very hot on the bottom, and quite uncomfortable on the legs after a while.
I decided to see if the Laptop Desk 2.0 actually helped to cool my laptop so I decided to site my laptop on a table for 15 minutes and record it’s temperatures and then sit the laptop on top of the Laptop Desk 2.0 for 15 minutes and see what the temps were then. Well the conclusion I came to was not really any, except that there was no change at all in the temperature of my laptop. I did notice that the fan did not come on as often while under load while on the Laptop Desk 2.0.
The Laptop Desk 2.0 does seem nice and sturdy, it seems like it will last, probably through a couple laptop upgrades.
Summary:
In closing, I can honestly say that I found nothing wrong with the Laptop Desk 2.0, it does what it is supposed to do and actually makes using a laptop more enjoyable. I will be packing this with me where ever I go now, it is, I believe, a must have addition to your laptop accessory collection. This is something that should come standard with all laptops, maybe Dell can start giving these away with their laptops. I can easily recommend this to anyone who owns a laptop, even if you don’t use it on your lap, the adjustable stand makes using your laptop much more enjoyable and comfortable for long periods of time.
DragonSteelMods gives the LapWorks Laptop Desk 2.0 a 5 out of 5 score and our Recommended Award as well.
Pros:

-Durable
-Multiple uses
-Well designed
-Overall a great product for the price
Cons:
-None that I could find, although I would like to see a cup holder attachment!!
