Noctua NF-A4x10 FLX 40mm Fan Review

Installation and Testing

A 40mm fan isn’t exactly something standard on computers, but you can find them in many of the peripherals you might be using with or in your computer. I like to use a an Icy Dock hard drive dock, the one I have is tray-less, which is the best kind I think and it happens to use a 40mm fan. I’ve had this for a few years now and the fan is old and dirty and it’s starting to make a bit of noise meaning it might need replaced eventually. I thought what better way to demonstrate the use for the Noctua 40mm fan that replacing the fan in my HDD dock.  It won’t hurt to have a nicer and quieter fan installed I think.

The first thing I had to do was take it all apart and this did require removing a lot of screws to get inside. Once inside I found the fan and I found that it used a 3-pin connector, meaning it has three wires, red, yellow and black.

The Noctua 40mm fan does have the same three wires.

I knew I’d have to use the OmniJoin kit but found I couldn’t use the included adapter because it was only two wires.

So that means I have to do some cutting and splicing involving the OmniJoin kit.

I had to connect the three wires of the fan to the old three wires of the connector.
