Pierce Brosnan beyond Bond

Pierce Brosnan is one of the most popular James Bond actors of all time, alongside Sean Connery and the current Bond, Daniel Craig. We’ve seen him in GoldenEye, Die Another Day, The World is Not Enough and Tomorrow Never Dies playing table games in casinos as well as lusting over gorgeous women.

You might be shocked to realise that some of the characters Brosnan plays in his other films are nothing like 007 and here we take a closer look at some of those roles.

Mamma Mia! (2008)

A revolutionary musical whose soundtrack includes all of the greatest hits from Swedish pop group ABBA. Mamma Mia! was a huge hit among everyone, young and old. Let’s be honest, nobody can resist a good old sing-along to Dancing Queen.

The storyline revolves around young Sophie, who is about to marry the love of her life but desperately wants her real dad to be by her side. After stumbling upon her mother’s diary from the year she was conceived, Sophie reads the contents in an attempt to find her long lost dad. After a lot of ‘dot dot dots’ Sophie secretly invites three men, with each one potentially being her father.

The truth is that Sophie’s mum, Donna, has no clue who could be the father and when they turn up unexpectedly, she panics, with many desperate attempts to keep Sophie and the men apart. Brosnan plays strapping potential father Sam Carmichael, the man who Donna always loved the most but was promised to another woman back in England.

Donna and Sam reignite their love by the end of the film and get married, leading Brosnan to play a leading role in the 2018 sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.

Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)

One of the greatest films produced in the ’90s which is now over 25 years old. The most memorable character Mrs Doubtfire is played by the late Robin Williams, but Brosnan also plays an important role in this film. A credit which potentially secured his spot as the next James Bond just two years later.

Daniel (Williams) and Miranda (Sally Field) Hillard are getting a divorce after many years, leaving their three kids in turmoil as well as pulling them away from their loving father. Miranda decides to hire a nanny and Daniel works with his creative brother Frank to secure the job – by dressing up as an old lady.

With the children and Miranda unknowingly in the capable hands of Daniel, the family get the chance to heal and move forward with their lives, which is where Brosnan comes in as the character Stuart Dunmeyer. In an attempt to keep his family close but get them back, Daniel makes some hasty decisions which lead to Stuart choking in a restaurant and Daniel revealing his identity trying to save him.

A classic film that has become an icon in pop culture with memes, video parodies and slang phrases. If you haven’t already seen this film, be sure to watch it for the belly-aching laughs and Williams’ voicing talents.
